Tea was sold in the form of loose leaves before tea bags were invented. To keep the tea fresh, it was kept in tea caddies, or tea bins (often foil-lined). The storekeeper would scoop out a quantity for a customer, and weigh it, to determine how much the customer would have to pay for it. |
