Description |
A Vermont-collected fern specimen of Osmunda cinnamomea L, that was traded to an Owen Sound, Grey County collector, W. R. McColl, no date provided (he died in 1933). It is mounted on a large piece of paper. It was initially collected by Miss E. M. Kittredge and exchanged with W. R. McColl who had an "EXCHANGE HERBARIUM" at Owen Sound. |
Provenance |
One of a group of specimens pressed and mounted on paperboard that W. R. McColl assembled between 1917 to 1930. W. R. McColl was an active botanist and collector in the 1920s, and this item was likely mounted around 1920. He was an Owen Sound businessman / merchant (b. 1855-d. 1933). The Owen Sound branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources later updated the collection with white paper folder top covers, likely as environmental protection from dust and light. At an unknown date, the specimens were given to Nels Maher, an Owen Sound printer, field naturalist and fern expert, who kept them at his home. After 2005, they were kept by his wife, Jean Maher (née Weir). . |
