Description |
Large, handmade Kilsyth School banner. The burgundy silk banner has hand-painted maple leaves and gold paper lettering glued onto it. A row of metallic gold bullion-style bobbin lace and pink embroiderery decorates the top edge. The bottom edge has a yellow fringe. The banner is tacked to two burgundy-painted, wooden carrying poles. |
Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown, but made in Kilsyth, Grey County. Dates to before 1959. Belonged to S.S. #3 Derby, which was also known as the Kilsyth School. It began in 1853, but did not have its first log structure until 1856. In 1873, a stone school structure was opened. It closed in 1959, and the pupils were transferred to the Central School in Kilsyth. It may have been carried in parades and at school fair events. Last owned by Norman Playter of Owen Sound, Grey County. He often acquired items from public auctions. |
