Description |
One of two ornamental Victorian black cast iron garden urns. |
Provenance |
Used in Owen Sound, Grey County by Sheriff George Snider. Owen Sound had a foundry by the 1850s (e.g. Wm. Kennedy, as well as Mr. Corbet's foundry) but it is unknown if the garden urn pair was cast in town. Last owned by Gordon Wilkinson. Murray Wilkinson told museum staff that he and his brother are relatives of Sheriff George Snider, as their mother's mother was a niece of George & Jane Snider. The Sniders were also connected by marriage to the Sherriff Moore family of Owen Sound (Charles Moore). |

Function |
One of a pair of cast iron Victorian garden urns, intended to be displayed outdoors near one's residence. These 19th-century garden urns were used in Owen Sound, Ontario in the past. Sheriff Snider of Owen Sound owned them. It is not known if they were cast locally, but it is a possibility, as there were a couple foundries in Owen Sound. |
