Provenance |
This item was a project of the St. Vincent Township Red Cross group in Grey County during the First World War (then known as the European War). It has 728 names recorded on it. Each person recorded on it paid ten cents to have his or her name put on it. The quilt was auctioned off at St. John's Church at a garden party. Tom Ashby was the auctioneer. Donald Palmer and Isaac Porter bid on the quilt and raised up the price. William Rows made the winning big, purchasing it, then turned it back in for resale and then re-purchased it for $15.00. Mr. Rows, (pronounced "Rouse") owned the farmhouse that is now in Moreston Heritage Village at Grey Roots Museum & Archives. After William Rows died, the quilt went to his son, E. Albert Rows, and last belonged to his wife (first name unknown). |
