Provenance |
Manufactured by Newell Limited in Prescott, Ontario. Dates to the 20th-century. Belonged to William Humphrey Taylor. He was the son of William Taylor, who started a bottling company in Owen Sound, Grey County in 1884. In 1886, he partnered with John C. Pringle to form the Taylor and Pringle company. According to page 117 of Melba Croft's "Growth of a County Town", in 1909, Taylor and Pringle were Owen Sound's sole Coca-Cola retailers. John Pringle died in 1911, and William Taylor created William Taylor and Son, Limited on April 19, 1917. After his death and that of his son, Christopher, in January and May of 1925, his business was managed by Clara Taylor and her son, Humphrey Taylor (born 1909). Upon her death in 1956, Humphrey Taylor became Manager. The two-storey brick factory was located at 957 4th Ave. East. Circa 1960, the firm's name changed to Taylor Soft Drinks Limited, and they continued to bottle Coca-Cola. The firm was sold in 1971. Last owned by Nora Helen Taylor, a daughter of William Humphrey Taylor. |

Function |
At the time of this item's production, ice was harvested from lakes and sawn into ice blocks which would be kept in an ice house until required. In towns and cities, horse-drawn vans or wagons would deliver ice to customers. The ice man would use ice tongs to move a single block of ice to a container. To use an ice pick, one would need to have the ice in a container that was open-topped and placed at a good height for stabbing downwards. The customer would usually have their own ice pick, that would be jabbed repeatedly and forcefully into the ice block to splinter it apart so that smaller pieces of ice could be used for beverages, making ice cream, etc. |
