Description |
One-cent Canadian coin, dated 1901. This copper coin has "ONE CENT" and the year "1901" on one side, surrounded by a border of a serpentine vine with maple leaves. The other side has a leftwards-facing head of Queen Victoria (she died in 1901). |
Provenance |
This 1901 coin was placed in a cornerstone box of the House of Refuge at Markdale, Grey County, on June 18, 1903 (the facility opened June, 1904). It was part of a group of ten pieces of coinage to show Victorian and Edwardian coins of the time. There is information about the opening and history of the House of Refuge in the book MARKDALE: THE CROSSROADS OF GREY, 1988, pp. 142-154. The County's House of Refuge (poor house) later became known as the Grey-Owen Lodge. When the Lodge was demolished in 1998, the cornerstone box was opened up. The site was re-used by Grey County for a new nursing home, called Grey Gables. |
