Description |
A large brass brooch that has been given a black (possibly japanned) finish (likely was intended as a mourning brooch). Centrally there is a faux convex stone, with a decorative margin. The rest of the brooch has an overall oval shape, with a bend and a pressed lattice and flower pattern. The brass pinstem is hinged and catches into a simple metal curl, that also is black-finished. There is no maker's mark, suggesting that it pre-dates 1891 (a Victorian item). |

Provenance |
May have originally belonged to Mary McKinley (neé Penner) of Bognor, Sydenham Township, Grey County, or a female ancestor. She married William McKinley, a Bognor blacksmith. They later moved to the Holland Centre area. Subsequently owned by her daughter, Beatrice McDonald (neé McKinley), who was married to Peter McDonald, and lived in Grey County. Beatrice McDonald later lived at Chatsworth, Grey County. She likely was also related to Wm. McKinley Sr. (b. 1819 in Scotland) and his wife Beatrice McKinley (b. 1829 in Scotland). This older couple had emigrated in 1856. They were in the 1901 census, as were her parents. |

Function |
A Victorian brooch, that was likely intended for mourning wear, as the display side is completely covered with a black finish (now worn). This type of brooch was used to fasten a detachable lace collar or be pinned at the front collar area of a woman's bodice. |
