Description |
A round ceramic jar lid with a circular transfer-print image showing the Owen Sound harbor and the C.P.R. elevators in the background with multiple large ships docked in front of them, with a few trees to the left. The primary colours are blue, brown, pink, black and green. The illustration is captioned beneath with 'OWEN SOUND HARBOR". There is no maker's identification present. Around the rim of the lid and the transfer-print have an applied gold finish. |
Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown. Made in Germany. Shipped to Owen Sound to be printed with local content and sold as a souvenir likely at a local shop. Dates to between 1897 and 1911. Provenance unknown. Collected by Arthur Harrison (1918-2000) and inherited by daughter-in-law, Helen Harrison of Owen Sound, Grey County. In 1883, the C.P.R. had three ships built in Scotland and brought to Canada. Since the 1897-built elevator is visible, this transfer-printed ribbon plate dates to between 1897 and 1911. On December 11, 1911, both grain elevators burnt down, and were not immediately replaced. As a result, the C.P.R. decided to change its fleet headquarters location. |
