It was initially collected by Mrs. H.C. Ackley of Los Angeles in November 1928, was traded to/collected by W. R. McColl, who had an Exchange Herbarium at Owen Sound, Grey County. W. R. McColl was an active botanist and collector in the 1920s, and this item was collected by him from a Mrs. H.C. Ackley of Los Angeles, and the date of November, 1928 was recorded. He was an Owen Sound businessman / merchant (b. 1855-d. 1933). The Owen Sound branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources later updated the collection with white paper folder top covers, likely as environmental protection from dust and light. At an unknown date, the specimens were given to Nels Maher, an Owen Sound printer, field naturalist and fern expert, who kept them at his home. After 2005, they were kept by his wife, Jean Maher (née Weir). |
