An advertising giveaway item from the Empire Stove and Furnace Co. Limited of Owen Sound. It is a toy spatula, cast out of iron. There are three slots in the lifter end, and a hanging hole in the handle area. There is no lettering cast. The bottom of the iron miniature frying pan is cast with "EMPIRE / STOVES / & / RANGES / OWEN SOUND." See Related for the miniature frying pan novelty that came with it. |

Made at the Empire Stove & Furnace Co. Limited foundry of Owen Sound, Grey County, in the 20th-century. It was formerly known as the Canadian Heating & Ventilating Co. Ltd., which was established in 1903 by Mr. W. J. Christie of Owen Sound, Grey County. Some of the C.H. & V. Co. products had the word "Empire" in their model names. In 1917, the company was re-organized and re-named as "The Empire Stove and Furnace Company". Reportedly the baked enamelling plant was added in 1929. There was a fire on July 22, 1944, at the factory. The company was sold in 1950 to the Moffat Bros. They closed it in 1952. Provenance unknown. Last belonged to Sharon Pollock of the Kemble area of Grey County. |
