Description |
Glazed white ironstone china wheat (corn pattern) dinner plate, with a J. & G. Meakin transfer-printed mark (lion and unicorn) as well as an impressed mark. It has five wheat head motifs at the rim. |
Makers mark |
Back has a black transfer print of a recumbent lion at the left of a tilted crowned garter, with a unicorn at the right, and the wording IRONSTONE CHINA and J. & G. MEAKIN. There is also a nearby impress-stamped mark of J. & G. MEAKIN, over "1". |
Provenance |
Made by J. & G. Meakin (later Limited) of England. Exported to Canada. The maker's mark pre-dates 1890. Used by the Hugh and Jeanette McKay family, who farmed in the Annan/Leith area of Sydenham Township, Grey County. The McKay family farm was located about one mile north of Leith. The item next belonged to Donald Gordon (Doug) McKay and his wife Olive (née Beattie) of Sydenham Township, who later moved to a farm in Derby Township. Passed down to their daughter, Donna McKay-Mills of Owen Sound, Grey County. |
