Description |
Painted, wooden folk art carving of a hay wagon (depicting summer). The wagon and horse team are mounted on a green-painted wooden board. The two horses are painted black with white feet. The wagon is painted red. The carved male driver has a cap and clothing glued onto him, and wears suspenders. He is standing and holding the reins with one hand, while the other hand holds a bottle-shaped object which is painted red and gold. Inked along the side of the wagon is "MADE BY GEO. L. MEYERS / 1967 HANOVER". |

Made by George Louis Myers in Hanover, Grey County. Dates to 1967. Belonged to George Louis Myers. He was born in Sullivan Township, Grey County on April 13, 1897. He was a son of Henry and Augusta Myers (née Drew), who farmed at Lot 17, Concession 4, Sullivan Township. He married Hilda Gateman on May 28, 1924, when he was twenty-six and she was nineteen. His family moved to Hanover, Grey County in 1956, where he began carving. He died on June 30, 1985 at the age of eighty-eight, and is buried in Hanover Cemetery. His son, Maurice H. Myers (1932-1969), was a friend of John Vetter. Last owned by John and Edna Vetter of Waterloo, Ontario, who inherited it in 1968. |
