Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown, but made in Leith, Grey County. Dates to the 19th-century. Belonged to the Leith Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1864. It officially opened with its first service on Sunday, January 26, 1866. It became known as the Leith United Church in 1925. The church is considered one of the finest examples of pre-Confederation architecture in the Municipality of Meaford. It ceased being used as a preaching point in 1969, but over the years was used for weddings and concerts. It and its cemetery were designated as an Ontario Provincial Historic Heritage Site in 1992. Its address later became 419134, Tom Thomson Lane. In the late 20th-century, the building was restored and the original windows were replaced with replicas. Last owned by Donna McKay-Mills of Owen Sound, Grey County. She purchased them at an auction, as her McKay ancestors lived in Leith. Her father grew up in Leith, and is buried in the churchyard. |
