Function |
Used by carpenter or woodworker to drill a hole in wood. The terms screw, twist or spiral are applied to augers and auger bits which have a body twisted into a sprial shape. Auger bits (twist bits) resemble the corresponding pattern of twist augers, but are usually only 8-10 inches long and are provided with a tapered square tang for use in a brace. They bore holes from about 1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. One of the main advantages of the twisted form is that shavings ascend the spiral body and therefore frequent withdrawl of the tool to clear it is unnecessary. |
