Description |
Ayton W. I. Red Cross fund-raising signature quilt / name quilt. Item has pink (maybe once red)-embroidered corner motifs (that from a distance, form red crosses) and bright blue-embroidered names on white fabric blocks. Each block has four pink corner motifs and each corner has two blue names (in two lines) which create a diamond effect. The quilt lines echo this diamond, and there is a central squarish quilt line in each block. Where the blocks meet, the pink corner motifs create a larger pink (cross) motif. The border area is white, with large plain quilted scallops. The edging is plain white. The quilt is thin, and lightweight. There are a total of 42 blocks; seven across and six down. BLOCK 1: Mrs. D. Provenance |
Made by the Ayton Women's Institute. It was a war-time project in the early 1940s, when the group was doing Red Cross work. They charged 10 cents to anyone who wanted to have his or her name embroidered on it, and after its completion, tickets were sold to win the item. It belonged to Florence Morris, who ran a small cafe in Ayton. After her death, it was put on public display in a small hall in Ayton. It was last owned by the Ayton Women's Institute. |
