Description |
Stoneware wine jug from James Notter's store, late. It is still corked. It is a beige, glazed stoneware jug. The shoulder has: "JAMES NOTTER / WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANT / WHOLESALE & RETAIL / OWEN SOUND ONT" (impressed and printed blue mark). The pulled handle attaches to shoulder (hand-moulded handle). The top of the rim is left unglazed. |
Provenance |
It is unknown which pottery made this jug. James Notter had a wine & spirit business. In 1879, Jas. Notter & Co. advertised that they sold groceries, wines and liquors, teas, tobaccos, china and glassware. An 1894 source lists "Notter & Scott....Grocers" as an Owen Sound business that was established in 1892. Not too much is known about James Notter. His brother Richard seemed to be more well-known, as he served as an Owen Sound mayor. "Richard Notter came to Owen Sound in 1865 and established his business, only a few years after coming to Canada from his native Cook [Cork] County, Ireland. Nine years later, he took his brother James into partnership under the firm name of "R. & J. Notter." In 1882, Richard Notter is believed to have sold out to his brother James Notter. An 1876 list of Owen Sound businessman included "Notter, James & Co.", so did he use his name singly before he actually bought out the business?? After being made for used at the James Notter store, it was owned by a family in Sydenham Township, Grey County. It was last owned by Alma Stott of Woodford, Grey County. |

A stoneware container for fluids, commercially made at a pottery for use at a general store. A cork stopper was used to close it. It likely was used for whiskey or wine in the past, as these were retailed at the James Notter general store. |
