Description |
White, glazed ceramic (ironstone china) covered vegetable dish (a) by MELLOR, TAYLOR & Co. dating to the 1882-1904 period. The lid (b) has a china lift handle. The dish part has two china lift handles. Base stamp reads "Warranted Stone China Mellor, Taylor & Co England". Raised panel for Rd No (but not visible). Two horizontal loop handles (simlar to ones for tea cups makes handles look ill-proportioned and not matching). Embossed shell design around base, embossed diagonal fluting exterior body. Scalloped rim. Mold made. Lid has been mended once and has tea cup handles at the ends. Embossing (fan/shell design around handle with branches). Diagonal circular fluting. |

Manufactured by the Mellor, Taylor & Co. between 1882 and 1904. The maker is Mellor, Taylor & Co. This company was at the Top Bridge Works (c. 1882-3) and then at the Cleveland Works (c. 1884-1904), at Burslem, Staffordshire Potteries (1880-1904). The mark is not illustrated by Godden. This company also made chamber pots and platters. Original provenance unknown. Used by the Rixon or Ainslie family at Owen Sound and/or Leith. Last owned by Eleanor Rixon. |
