Description |
This is a highly-decorative silver-plated butter knife, with a scalloped blade edge and an upward-turned point. Someone has scratched "Miss V J King" on the underside of the handle (NOTE: This is actually remnants of the donor's name, Miss Eva Jenkins, which was marked on the handle in 1961). It has a 1847 Rogers Bros. A1 mark. The blade is designed with an intentional twist, so that the blade can be vertical, when the knife is set on a surface. The ornate design has a raised, circular "love knot" and curlicue design. The handle ends with an upwards curve and also has a knot motif on it. |
Makers mark |
It has a 1847 Rogers Brothers A1 mark: "1847 ROGERS BROS. A1" |
Provenance |
This item origially belonged to Mrs. Herbert W. Jenkins, then to Eva E. Jenkins, her daughter. ROGERS BROS. In 1847, the Rogers Bros. company began to produce electroplated silverware in the United States. The brothers had a lot of changeovers in the history of their silverware industries. In 1855, the business became known as "Rogers Bros. Mfg. Co.". This butter knife is likely a younger item than that, perhaps late 19th-century. |
