Description |
An Orangeman's ribbon badge from the Jackson Loyal Orange Lodge No. 1247. It has only one display side. The top has a circular and convex rosette built up of layers of orange, purple, blue, and red tucked ribbons, with a central gold bullion and brass sequins area (some loss is now exposing the stuffing). The wide ridged silk ribbon has two vertical purple stripes flanking a printed motif of a crown and sceptre and a book with "GLORIOUS, PIOUS AND / IMMORTAL MEMORY", then a printed illustration of King William of Orange on his white horse, and "L.O.L. / No. 1247 / DERBY". The bottom end once had a row of gold bullion fringing, but much of it is gone now. There is a faint "R. S." in the bottom area of the orange area (Royal Scarlet degree?). There is a black velvet backing piece and a metal safety-style pin stitched onto it. |
Provenance |
Likely manufactured and custom-printed at the Dominion Regalia Company Ltd. of Toronto, which was established c. 1881. Used at Jackson, Derby Township, Grey County by a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge No. 1247 group. This Loyal Orange Lodge received its charter in August of 1867, and disbanded in 1931. The item likely had belonged to William Hewitson (the second), who had been raised at Jackson, where the Hewitson family homestead was, or by one of his relatives. There was a W. W. Hewitson who was a member of No. 1247 circa 1904. William later moved to Annan, Sydenham Township in 1919, to farm there. Last owned by Robert and Myrna Hewitson of Annan, Grey County. |
