Description |
Kerosene wall lamp with a WHITE STAR burner, a DOMINION GLASS font bracket lamp and a round reflector. The colourless glass lamp font (A) has the maker's embossed diamond-D mark on its underside. The sides are plain, and the pressed glass mould line is visible. The burner (B) has embossed-style lettering on its top side, reading "2" and "WHITE STAR". The burner has four fenestrated prongs with pointed tops, to hold the chimney. The glass chimney (C) has no lettering and is 22 cm high and 9.5 cm in diameter at its bulge. It is made of colourless blown glass, and has a plain top edge. The bracket "D" is all-metal, and its frame has a plain, dark teal-blue finish and no lettering. Attached to it is a round, fluted metal reflector (which was once shiny and plated). The height of the bracket at the reflector is of 28 cm. There is an upside-down, keyhole-shaped cut-out in the back of the bracket, for hanging it up. |

Function |
A lighting appliance that would be mounted on a wall. One would have to lift out the font and take it and the chimney down frequently for cleaning and wick maintenance and re-fueling. In the early 20th-century, these were called "bracket lamps". The round reflector at the back was an attempt to increase the light. |
