Description |
Souvenir plate (ribbon plate) with "C.P.R. STR. ALBERTA OWEN SOUND" on it. This plate is chinaware. It is moulded with a openwork pattern and a serrated edge. This openwork area was decorated with a shiny gilt colouration. Centrally, there is a gold ring surrounding an oval-shaped colour transfer print of an illustration of the two grain elevators at Owen Sound, with a steamship docked nearby. The illustration is captioned "C.P.R. STR. ALBERTA OWEN SOUND". There is no maker's identification present. |

Provenance |
In 1883, the C.P.R. had three ships built in Scotland and brought to Canada. One, the S.S. ALBERTA, is depicted on this plate. This steamship is shown docked at Owen Sound, Ontario near the C.P.R. grain elevators. Since the 1897-built elevator is visible, this transfer-printed ribbon plate dates to between 1897 and 1911. On Dec. 11, 1911, both grain elevators burnt down, and were not replaced. As a result, the C.P.R. decided to change its fleet headquarters location. Likely belonged to Blanche Hindman (neé Proctor) (b. 1893) of Owen Sound, Grey County. Last owned by her daughter Helen Evans (neé Hindman). |
