Provenance |
This name quilt was made during the Great War (later called the First World War) as a fund-raising project by the St. George's Anglican Church Red Cross Society women at Owen Sound, Grey County. The names on the quilt record employees of the North American Furniture Company, which was also located in Owen Sound. There are also some military officer names, e.g. Colonel McFarland, Captain Dobie (these officers were involved with the 147th Battalion when it was raised in 1915-1916). Colonel McFarland was from Markdale, Grey County. Capt. Dobie was from Sullivan Township. The Red Cross group made quilts to order and sold them for $10. A fee of 10 cents was charged to anyone wishing his or her name to appear on them. This quilt was purchased by George J. Foot and used by him and his wife. Eva C. Foot at their house at 4th Avenue West and then later at 574 13th Street West. The quilt was passed on to Alice Foot (Mrs. Johnstone Douglas Urquhart). Mrs. Alice Urquhart died at Toronto on March 4, 1976. The quilt subsequently belonged to Josephine Walker (née Urquhart) of Toronto, one of Alice's daughters. |
