The top one covers the opening wherein a quantity of loose safety matches would be placed, and the bottom one covers the access area where one would grasp a match when required. "Compliments / J. H. Provenance |
Made for the J. H. Sudden General Store of Chatsworth, Grey County, to be a give-away item, so it likely belonged to a family in Holland or Sullivan Township, Grey County, as Chatsworth is situated between them, along the highway. John H. Sudden (b. 1874) was a General Store merchant in the village of Chatsworth in the 1901 census, and in a 1903 directory. Provenance unknown after it left the store. Collected by Glen Stephens of Williamsford, Grey County, at an unknown date. His estate was auctioned in the fall of 2017. Grey Roots Museum purchased this piece from the second of his estate auctions on September 23, 2017. It was purchased by the Grey Roots Museum & Archives from his Estate Sale auction in September, 2017. |

Function |
A utilitarian and practical form of store advertising. A general store owner at Chatsworth, Grey County, had a number of these tinware wall match holders made and printed with his store's name. They were likely given out to his customers, who would keep the items in their homes for a long time. Wall match holders were usually mounted on a wall near a stove, often in the kitchen area. |
