Description |
First Nations-made, velvet-covered moccasin vamp (tongue-shaped) with a beadwork design on it, 19th-century, found amidst the Catharine Sutton collection. It also originally was burgundy-coloured in the past (now faded to brown). It is lined with cardboard to provide some stiffness. Black thread has been used. The beadwork has black beads used in an outlining effect, with dull gold-coloured and white and pinkish beads also used. There is some dull gold-coloured thread used in chain stitches to provide some filling inbetween the bead lines. |
Provenance |
It is unknown who made this item, but it is very likely a 19th-century item, and is First Nations-made. It was found amidst the items that had formerly belonged to Catharine B. Sutton (née Sunego) and her family. The items had been passed down to her grand-daughter, Mrs. Catherine Morgan (née Staves) of Brantford, Ontario, the wife of Rev. Alfred Morgan. |
