Description |
Aqua glass pop bottle with a bulbous top end. It is emboss-molded with "WILLIAM TAYLOR / OWEN SOUND". The bubble imperfections and aqua colouration suggest its date. It appears to have originally had a Hutchinson bottle stopper, of which the two pieces of metal found inside the bottle are likely remnants. |

Manufactured for William Taylor, a bottler at Owen Sound. Dates to the 1880s. Belonged to William Humphrey Taylor of Owen Sound, Grey County. He was a son of William Taylor, who was born in 1861 and started a bottling company in Owen Sound in 1884. He lived in the town for forty years. In the 1891 census, he was listed as a "Gingerale Manufacturer". This bottle pre-dates his partnership with John Corbet Pringle, which began in 1886. In 1884, William Taylor purchased the American Steam Bottling Works in Owen Sound, which were located near a hillside spring. Deciding to expand, he then selected another location. He ordered his bottling supplies from outside the town, and they were mainly transported by horse and wagon, or by schooner. After Mr. Corbet's death, William Taylor and others started "Wm. Taylor & Son Ltd." at Owen Sound in April, 1917. William Taylor died in 1925. Last owned by one of William Taylor's grand-daughters, Nora Helen Taylor. |
