Description |
One hand-forged, metal, four pronged fish spear. The spear no longer has its (wooden?) handle, just the iron. |
Provenance |
Likely belonged to Scottish-born James Pattison Telford (b. 1839-d. 1933), who lived for a while at Galt, Upper Canada, and grew up in Annan, in Sydenham Township, Grey County, where he became a blacksmith by trade. He later moved to Owen Sound. He and his brother (W.P. Telford the 2nd) belonged to the 31st Grey Battalion / 31st Grey Regiment. James was an active outdoorsman, who greatly enjoyed fishing, and he invented a trolling bait. The Telfords had a fishing and hunting cabin at Vail's Point for a long time. James was a friend of the Thomson family of Leith, and hunted and fished with John Thomson, father of Tom Thomson (the famous Canadian artist). |
