Description |
Beaded scarlet-coloured, rounded First Nation-made hand bag with a "Dove of Peace"? motif. It is hand-stitched. There is a lapel-like flap that is beaded. There is a red cloth tape handle. It has brown linen lining. Inside the flap there is the catalogue number in ink, and an old inked notation that appears to be a price mark, perhaps 1.20 or 1.25? There are two gussets to the bag. The exterior of the bag had a scarlet-red woollen cloth with a thick and raised beadwork pattern. There are mostly clear glass beads, with some smoky, tubular ones. The beadwork at the sides has some rose, yellow and green beads (tubular and large seed beads). The non-flap side is the most decorated area, and has a Dove of Peace? motif in clear, bright opaque blue and green tubular beads. The raised beading technique has several beads strung together for each line of the design. The perimeter of the flap has two rows of clear seed beads. It is consistent with Iroquois beadwork in style, motifs used and complexity. |
Provenance |
Appears to be an Iroquois beaded style. Made by an unknown First Nations beadworker. Formerly belonged to Catherine Duff (neé McKenzie). Thomas and Catherine were married on March 22, 1876. The last owners were their daughters, Annie M. Duff of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and her sister, Mrs. Herbert Withers of Glenville, West Virginia. |
