Description |
Three pieces of wooden pipe made of narrow, bored logs. The smallest is (a), and its log tapers to smaller diameter at one end. A remnant of leather is nailed onto the rim of the smaller end. A longer log with a shaped end is (b), and the longest piece is (c). It has an intentional, deep slot cut in it near the larger end, as well as a squarish piece of sheet metal covering the bored hole at the end. Metal bands were likely once used as connectors. |

Made by Frederick Boldt of Williamsford, Grey County. Dates to the late 19th-century. Frederick Boldt was born on November 17, 1859. Originally from Brant Township, he and his wife moved to Williamsford between 1881 and 1887. He was a casket maker and carpenter, and used a former school structure in Williamsford to store caskets circa 1887. He died in 1950. Belonged to William J. Black. It was used on the Black farm in Berkeley, Holland Township, Grey County. The 1901 census of Holland Township listed the Black family at Lot 66, Concession 2, W.T.S.R. Residing with them were Mary McCann and J. Mary McCann. Last owned by John McCann of Meaford, Grey County. |
