Provenance |
This quilt was made by the Springmount Red Cross Helpers of Derby Township, Grey County, in February and March of 1917, during the First World War as a fundraising quilt (see Minutes of the Springmount Red Cross Workers in Grey County Archives and multi-media files). It was made from small pieces left from the cuttings of surgical shirts. $175 dollars was raised by asking people for 5 cents (or more if they wished) to have their name(s) put onto it. Nearly 1,000 names are on the quilt. It was put on display in the window of the Owen Sound Carpet Company from March 10 to March 14, 1917, and then was to be sent to Colonel McFarland in England to be used in the hospital where the largest number of wounded soldiers from Grey County were stationed to lift their spirits. After its arrival in England, Mrs. G. F. McFarland wrote a letter to Mrs. Penner (at whose home the quilt was constructed) saying that after careful consideration with her husband, Mrs. Annie Eaton, Mrs. Kerr and several other officers, they decided against sending it to one of the hospitals as wounded Grey County men were scattered all over England and each hospital had 35 to 40 wards, where there was no guarantee that more than one or two Grey County men would see it. Instead, they sent it to the Grey (County) Rooms at 20 Craven Street in London to be used as a couch cover there, under the charge of Annie Eaton so that Grey County soldiers (especially those from the 147th regiment) calling at the rooms could see it on their leaves (see Annie Eaton biography). A February 17, 1919, Owen Sound Sun Times article refers to a "large autograph quilt sent by the Annan Red Cros to Mrs. Eaton's Grey Rooms" returned to Grey County and received by Mrs. John Bell 7th Street E., Owen Sound from her husband Pte. Bell who was still in England and had found the quilt when he helping to pack up things in the Grey Rooms. It is referred to as "the Annan Quilt" but likely refers to this (Springmount) quilt, just that it had been brought to the Annan Red Cross to be shipped to England. It was last owned by Fred A. Pringle, who resided on Alpha Street, Owen Sound, in the 1960s. It is unknown how he came to have it. |

Function |
Various groups made quilts, often subscribing, so that people would pay ten cents to have their name added. After the project was finished, it was either raffled or auctioned off to raise funds for the organization's war work. |
