Description |
C. K. Baines & Son CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) Liners cigar box. This box held 50 cigars. There is a near fully-intact blue and gold on white paper label on the proper left side of the box with an illustration of a steam ship and text below it which reads "Manufactured by / C. K. Baines & Son / Owen Sound" and has a border with a shining star in each corner. "C.P.R. Liners" is embossed into the top of the lid and the front (the "Liners refer to the S.S. Athabasca, the S.S. Alberta and the S.S. Algoma (or the S.S. Manitoba, as the Algoma went down in 1885 and the Manitoba replaced it in 1889) . The proper right side and back are blank. The seal is present, but the portion on the top of the lid seems to have been purposefully destroyed (scratched away). Only "Canada", "Fifty" and "50" is legible. On the back of the seal is an illustration of a beaver. The interior lid label is intact. The photograph used for an illustration is of the C.P.R. liners docked in Owen Sound Harbour. The photo is taken looking out into the sound (showing the starboard sides of the ships). The first is the Alberta which has two masts each of which are flying seven flags, then likely either the Algoma / Manitoba or the Athabasca, a smaller ship, then the other (Algoma / Manitoba or Athabasca) with the elevator in the background. The border and text are in gold and read: C. P. R. Liners / Manufactured by / C. K. Baines & Son / Owen Sound, Ont." The interior paper lining is pink coloured paper. |
Provenance |
Made by or for C. K. Baines & Son of Owen Sound, Grey County, sometime after 1883 but before 1889 when a second, larger elevator was built behind the one in the interior lid illustration (or an older photo was used). Provenance unknown after manufacture and sale. Collected by Norm Playter (date unknown). Purchased by Grey Roots Museum & Archives in 2018. |
