Description |
Piece of gallows rope from the hanging of Charles Henry Love, 1913. |
Provenance |
This rope was used in 1913 at the Grey County gaol in Owen Sound, Grey County, for the execution of Charles Henry Love of Ceylon, Grey County. Mr. Love had been convicted on March 22, 1913 for the murder of his wife, who died on December 14, 1912, at their home at Ceylon (Artemesia Township, Grey County). This rope remnant had been in the possession of the late Mr. Cordingley of Wiarton, Bruce County. Reportedly Mr. Cordingley was on the Grey County Council in 1913 and had received this rope piece from the Gaoler, Mr. John Miller. The Grey County gaol (jail) was then located along 3rd Avenue East, Owen Sound, Ontario and the Grey County council meetings were also held in the same building. |
