Description |
This is a cream-coloured lace parasol. It might have a bone handle and tip, and possibly dates from the 1850s? The handle is straight-shaped, and shiny, with a brown colouration. The tip is assymetrical. |
Provenance |
The last owner, Eleanor Rixon, and her sister, Laura Rixon, estimated that this parasol might be from the 1850s. Their father, Henry Rixon, was an Englishman who emigrated in 1860, and spent some time in Galt before he moved to Sydenham Township, Grey County, and lived at Leith. He married a Helen Ainslie of Leith, a daughter of Adam and Isabella Ainslie. In the 1880s, the Rixon family moved to Owen Sound, Ontario, where Mr. Rixon worked on various ships as a purser and established a sawmilling industry. The Ainslies moved as well. The Rixon residence was at 894 5th Avenue East. This building is pictured in Ruth Cathcart's book, HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION, p. 162. The Rixon burial plot is at Leith Cemetery, in the former Sydenham Township, and includes the following: William Augustus Rixon (b. 1869-d. 1892) Henry Rixon (father) 1838-1920 Helen Rixon (mother) 1847-1913 Ada A.
