Description |
This is a First Nations-made, open-topped woven splint basket. Its bentwood rim is secured with nails. The woven splints are noticeably damaged now. It was likely made by an Ojibwa basket maker. |
Provenance |
Maker unknown. Belonged to the Bishop family of Owen Sound, Grey County. It was likely obtained from someone of the Saugeen Ojibwa in the early 20th century. It was owned for a long time by Jean Bishop of Owen Sound. In the late 19th-century and early 20th-century, basket peddlars from the local reserves sold basketry in the Owen Sound area into the 1940s. |
