Description |
Double-headed maul. The long wooden handle tapers slightly, and thickens again before it is inserted into the head, forming a T-shape. The handle was factory-made, and the wood of its numbered side bears a faint, impressed maker's mark. It has a crescent moon shape, "MONARCH" and "LONG". The heavy wooden head is reinforced by a thicker area around its center, and it has a small diameter at both ends. The two hitting ends are also reinforced by iron bands. The central area of the head has metal washers and rivet heads. |
Makers mark |
Faintly impressed in the handle is a crescent moon shape and "MONARCH" and "LONG". |
Provenance |
Manufactured by "Monarch", and perhaps "Long" refers to the handle length? Likely dates to the late 19th-century. Belonged to James Dowkes. William Dowkes (1836-1920) was born near Castle Howard, Bulmur, Yorkshire, England, in 1836. He was brought to Canada when he was a child, in the early 1840s. The family settled near Mount Forest, but in the 1850s, William relocated to Owen Sound, Grey County, settling in a log cabin by the Pottawatomi River. He became a mariner, and sailed on Great Lake schooners. His wife was Amelia Dowkes (née Roseborough) (1835-1913). The Dowkes family lived at what later became 616, 15th Street West (the Brooke area of Owen Sound). One of their children was James Dowkes, who became an Owen Sound boat builder. His wife was Agnes Carson. His brother, W. J. "Bill" Dowkes, became an Owen Sound teacher. James Dowkes died in November of 1968, at the age of ninety-four. This item was last owned by Paul Capel of Owen Sound. |
