Description |
One of two similar wood and metal joiner's cramps. It is made of finished wood with adjustable, cast metal clamp parts. The long wooden bar piece is notched to create a rack. It was made using square nuts, round washers and a metal set screw. No maker's identification observed. This is the longer cramp of the two items. |
Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown. Likely dates to the early 20th-century. Belonged to Bill Hardy. He worked for the National Table Company, which was located at 1882, 3rd Avenue East, Owen Sound. According to Melba Croft's "Renewal of a Canadian Port", it began around 1898, and its early years were marked by two disastrous fires. This item likely post-dates the 1903 fire, after which the factory was rebuilt. It closed in 1960, and the building was sold in 1962. Last owned by Brian and Norma Rice of Sauble Beach, Bruce County. |
