Provenance |
Mary Jane Cole was a great-grandmother of the last owner, Hazel Manning. Hazel's full name was Sarah Hazel Eudry (Audrey) Manning. Sarah was the only surviving daughter of Helena and James Manning of Owen Sound, Grey County, and she said that she was born December 4, 1904 (her birth record reads December 3, 1904). She had two brothers, Lorne Manning [Toronto] and Roy Manning. Ms. Manning died on August 18, 1996, at Lee Manor, Owen Sound. Therefore, the sampler must have been brought to Owen Sound sometime between 1904 and 1907. |

Function |
A needleworked piece, typical of the sort of item young ladies were instructed in during the Victorian era, to practise embroidery skills, and create a personal record for a wall hanging. Mary Jane's father was an English farmer, but the family had six servants, so she had time to do needlework like this. |
