Description |
The Rows Family Crazy Quilt (from St. Vincent Township) It consists of coloured irregular shapes with different pattern finishes that are pieced together using coloured yarn and stitching technique. It is hard to count the number of blocks because they are different sizes and don't go straight across; some are even only half. There are tacking designs on each patch to secure them to the batting. The backing also has tacking designs to secure the batting place. The backing fabric has an all-over pattern of flowers and birds. It is predominately red in colour, with the birds predominately yellow, with blue, black and other colours. The quilt is hand-sewn, except for the binding, which has machine sewing. The binding is actually a folded over area of the backing. The variety of shapes and colours have a herringbone stitch to accentuate the seam areas. Black thread was used, in a fairly large stitch that may be known as "the gooseneck pattern". |

Made by Mrs. William Rows (pronounced Rouse), who lived in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, in the Ontario farmhouse building that is now situated at the Grey Roots Museum & Archives (moved to the property from the old museum location in 2004). Her daughter, Della Rankin (neé Rows) helped her finish it. Della married Charles Rankin. Last owned by Ethel Eaton (neé Rankin), Della and Charles' daughter. |
