Black-printed red silk ribbon badge, 16.6 cm x 6 cm, with "First Annual / GROCERS' / PICNIC / to Balmy Beach / Committee / Tuesday, / July 17th, 1900". |
Provenance |
Maker unknown. J. G. Spragge was an Owen Sound grocery store owner circa 1915. The Spragge family kept this ribbon badge, which dates to 1900. Balmy Beach is situated along the west shore of Owen Sound's bay. Circa 1900, it had the McLauchlan park and summer resort and various cottages, so it was a popular place for excursions and picnics. People often would go there on a small ferry boat from Owen Sound. |

Function |
The ribbon was intended to be worn on one's jacket, during an event, and then be kept afterwards as a souvenir item. Groups used to make special excursions to various places as a recreational, social time (e.g. to have picnics, play games, have competitions, etc.) In 1900, the J. K. McLauchlan park at Balmy Beach was an attraction just northwestwards of Owen Sound, Ontario. |
