Description |
This is a needle-pointed picture, with an unfinished "Moses in the Bullrushes" pattern, c. 1860. The needlepoint tapestry project still has a lot of empty space left in the ground. The top edge is not hemmed, and has a fringed appearance. The bottom edge has a plain hem. Colourful yarns are used. The left side has a boat amidst some rushes. There is a dancing couple in another area, and a dog motif. There is also an area with a large cushion, treasure chest and food basket. |
Provenance |
According to the Alfred Morgan, the last owner, this unfinished piece was needleworked by Catharine Sutton (neé Brown Sunego, also known as Nahneebahweequay). She had started it onboard a steam ship on her return to Canada after her 1860 visit to England. It is believed that she lost the pattern while she was on the ship, and that is why the piece was never completed. It is believed that the pattern was called "Moses in the Bull Rushes". Mrs. Sutton died in September of 1865, in Sarawak Township, Grey County, Canada West. The item was passed down in the family, eventually belonging to Catherine Morgan (neé Staves) of Brantford, Ontario, who was a grand-daughter of Catharine and William Sutton. Catherine Staves was married to Reverend Alfred Morgan. Alfred Morgan was the last owner of this item. |
