Provenance |
Part of a dining suite that belonged to Eliza Whaley, from Brooksdale, Ontario. Eliza and her husband John Whaley farmed about 200 acres in Brooksdale in the later part of 1800s to 1939 when John died. John was active in Brooksdale United Church and in the local county council and local insurance company as a volunteer director. The farm was auctioned off in 1943. Eliza and John had two children, Mable Clare Victoria (born 1909) and Albert (Bert) Cecil. Bert fell off the farm silo at a young age and badly injured his leg. This led him to take an education path versus a farming one. Bert studied law, graduated from Osgoode Law School and worked in Montreal and Florida before returning to Woodstock, Ontario. He eventually became Oxford County's crown attorney. Albert bought a home in Woodstock before the farm sold. He moved his mother and sister into this home and bought his family another home, nearby, in Woodstock. The family believes it was purchased early 1920 and nicknamed the table "Mable's Table". The dining room table moved from the farm to Woodstock around 1943. Mable also had an interesting history: As a single woman, she worked in an administration capacity on the police force, was officially a police officer and eventually a justice of the peace. She married late in life, and passed away almost 20 years before her husband. Upon upon her husband's death in 2003, the house and its furniture were bequeathed to John Whaley (original owner's grandson) of Oakville, Ontario. |
