Description |
A beige-coloured glazed stoneware ceramic crockery jar with three lines stamped in blue: BONNELL BROS. / GENERAL MERCHANDISE / WALTER'S FALLS. There is an orange peel texture. The interior has a smooth brown glaze. No pottery identification mark. It is missing a circular 1.1 cm area of glaze at the bottom front. The lip has a mended area. Provenance |
The pottery of origin is unknown, but this crockery jar was custom-made for the Bonnell Bros. store of Walters Falls, Grey County. The Bonnell Brothers, Henry and John, and their wives, moved to the village from Harkaway, where they each had farmed. "They bought the general store from Charles Carney, and a few years later, their brother, Hiram, joined them in the venture. By 1901 Henry Bonnell (d. 1912) and his son William Bonnell ran the store. Collected by Glen Stephens of Williamsford, Grey County, at an unknown date. His estate was auctioned in the fall of 2017. Grey Roots Museum purchased this piece from one of his estate auctions in September, 2017. |
