Description |
A large beige crock with two lift handles on either side. Near the top at the front painted in blue reads "B.S. MTG. CO. LTD. BRANTFORD" and underneath is a backward S shape. Stamped in black on the front reads "PRIEST & SPRAGGE/ GROCERIES, CHINA & GLASSWARE./ OWEN SOUND." There are two large cracks one down the front and one down the back. The inside is painted/glazed in a dark drown. |

Manufactured by the Brantford Stoneware Manufacturing Company (B.S. MFG. CO. LTD.), under the leadership of Henry Schuler (formerly of the Paris pottery). It was the last group to operate out of the Brantford pottery and was in business from 1894 to 1907. Used by Priest & Spragge of Owen Sound, the business opened about 1890 at 7 Poulett Street but is not seen in the Owen Sound Vernon's directory in 1911. Provenance unknown. Collected by Arthur Harrison (1918-2000) and inherited by daughter-in-law, Helen Harrison of Owen Sound, Grey County. |
