Description |
Factory-made baby carriage. Its underside is stencilled "45" and "SPRING PAT'D DEC 22 1871". The carriage has two springs flanking the push bar shafts at the back, and one spring at the front. The carriage has metal-rimmed, wooden-spoked wheels. The back wheels are larger than the front wheels, and each has ten spokes. The wooden parts of the carriage have a black paint finish with dull, gold-coloured striping. The back end has an ornate, delicate gold and red decoration which is either hand-painted or a transfer. The carriage still has its original sunshade, black, coated cloth curtain, and leather strap over the excelsior-stuffed and upholstered seat. The upholstery of the seat back has a very defined, tacked shaping or ridging. A piece of carpet lines the front end of the carriage and appears to be original to the piece. The metal uprights for the sunshade have a five-petalled flower motif in the cast iron. Thick metal rods were bent to make a decorative grille at the front of the carriage, and at the sides and back of the upholstered seat. No factory identification observed. The front of the sunshade has a decorative, light-brown fringe. The turned wooden push bar has a brown finish, and the tips of the bar have silvertone-plated metal finials. There is an X-shaped frame beneath the springs. The curtain (b) is removable. |
