Description |
Mosaic pattern pieced patchwork quilt (mosaic patterning like this is often called the "Grandmother's Flower Garden" pattern by quilters, and it is a traditional English pattern.) The patchwork is made up of equal-sized hexagonal patches. Usually these were paper-pieced to help with their precision during the stitching process. The hexagonal pieces are made of multi-coloured and printed cotton fabrics. The hexagons are 4.5 cm to 5 cm wide and there are likely more than 1,000 pieces in the piecing. The hexagons were sewn together by hand. The lining is a fine cotton fabric that was once white, but now is discoloured. The binding was machine-stitched. The quilting is done is a fairly close pattern. There was narrow cotton binding (now missing some of it). |
