Description |
A Canadian Heating & Ventilating Co. stove lid lifter (or an Empire Stove & Furnace Co. Ltd.one?). It is one metal casting, and had a silver-coloured plating or finish on it originally (now worn). There is a hanging hole at the end of the handle, and the word EMPIRE in impressed-style lettering is cast there with two long volutes giving it a margin. There is some indistinct patterning near the lifter end. The back side is concave and has more of the original finish left. |
Makers mark |
Simply impress-cast EMPIRE on the top surface of the handle, with two long impress-cast lines ending in curls that butt together in the mid-area of the handle, and then a straight line. |
Provenance |
Likely manufactured by the Canadian Heating and Ventilating Company of Owen Sound, Grey County. Dates to after 1903. In 1917, the company's name changed to the Empire Stove and Furnace Company Ltd. The business was located at 908, 2nd Avenue East, and the factory's address was 2362, 3rd Avenue East. A number of stoves and heaters manufactured in the "Empire" line were produced by the Canadian Heating and Ventilating Company (which used the short form C.H.& V. Co.). In 1950, the Empire stoveworks was purchased by the Moffat family, who left the Moffat Weston Plant to start their own company in Owen Sound. They closed the plant in 1952. Last owned by Norman Playter of Owen Sound, Grey County. He likely obtained it at a public auction in Grey County. |

Function |
A foundry-made cast metal stove lid lifter, that likely accompanied a parlour stove / heater, or a kitchen range. It would be held with a rag or something to protect one's hand from the heat when lifting a stove lid off of a stove hole when there was a fire inside. If the stove or heater was cold, then it could just be used to move the stove lid(s). |
