Description |
Women's black leather hatbox. Black leather with brown leather trim around all edges. Round shape with flat bottom end with two brass hinges and four resting feet. One buckle at each side (2) and one fastener (steel) key lock at the front. Thick leather handle at front attached by two round rings. Inside lined in a light blue damask. Loose pocket on the inside lid (held by elastic). On the inside flat edge is a smaller pocket. Label just above the smaller pocket reads, "McBrine Baggage Around the World Kitchener, Canada." Two snaps on the bottom inside (for holding hats in place). Outside lid has three labels one is not able to be made out; "MONTREAL" is one but is wearing off - the other "APPLY THIS LABEL TO END - NOT ON TOP OR SIDES OF BAGGAGE WHITE STAR LINE GLASGOW TO CANADA CABIN CLASS WANTED" then it has places to fill in: "Name: Miss [?] Adress: Montreal Steamship: Re[?] State Room No.: 31 Port of Landing: Sailing: Berth: TO BE FORWARDED TO P.HENDERSON & CO. PRINCES PIER STATION, GREENOCK." |

Made by McBrine Luggage. As the label reads "Kitchener", the box post-dates the First World War (ended in 1918). Provenance unknown. Last owned by Rosemary Kennedy, of Owen Sound, Grey County. Her parents were Robert Pollock Kennedy Jr. and Rhoda (Ross) Kennedy. Her grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pollock Kennedy Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. George Ross, all of Owen Sound. May have been inherited from her paternal aunt, Hazel Kennedy, of Owen Sound. |
