Description |
Birdseye maple workbench. The bench (a) has a left-hand vise at one end and a corner vise at the other. It came with clamps and pegs. It has a walled, rectangular shelf below its surface. Five finished, squared wooden pegs (b-f) are still with the table. They fit into the horizontal sockets, and slip through the vertical ones. There were likely many more pegs in two sets, originally. |
Makers mark |
No maker's mark is seen on the workbench, nor on the pegs. |
Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown, but likely made in Owen Sound, Grey County. Dates to between 1903 and 1960. Belonged to Bill Hardy. He worked for the National Table Company, which was located at 1882, 3rd Avenue East, Owen Sound. According to Melba Croft's "Renewal of a Canadian Port", it began around 1898, and its early years were marked by two disastrous fires. This item likely post-dates the 1903 fire, after which the factory was rebuilt. It closed in 1960, and the building was sold in 1962. Last owned by Brian and Norma Rice of Sauble Beach, Bruce County. |
