Description |
This is a militia cap badge insignia piece, (A), that is made of brass. It has the battalion number 31 in openwork numerals, and it would be secured to the man's cap by means of (B), the split pin (cotter pin-like fastener). The 31 refers to the 31st Grey Battalion of Grey County. The split pin is too small to apply a number to. The last owner of it suggested it may be a c. 1890 item. |

Provenance |
Unknown. Used by someone in the 31st Grey Battalion, which was a precursor of the 31st Grey Regiment, or perhaps by someone in the 31st Grey Regiment. Collected by Captain George Wakeford of Owen Sound, Grey County. Wakeford kept a note that read that he estimated the pin to be circa 1890, and that they were used between 1866 until sometime after 1900. For more information about this Grey County militia unit, and the changes made to their uniforms over the years, see Murray Telford's book SCARLET TO GREEN (1987). He shows a 31 badge like this one, with the caption "Large 31 brass numeral worn on forage caps from 1866 to after 1900, 31st Grey Battalion of Infantry." (page 42). |
