Description |
Colourless pressed glass Orange Quench soda pop bottle, 6 and a half fluid ounce capacity, used by Wm. Taylor & Son Ltd. at Owen Sound. It has the 1939 registered design pattern and also an inverted triangle mark, suggesting that it is from the 1940s-1950s. The skirted base has vertical ridges, and the mid-area has a stippled texture to simulate an orange. "Orange" is moulded on one side, and "Quench" on the other. |
Makers mark |
Base outer area has emboss-style moulded lettering in a cartouche: WM. TAYLOR & SON LTD. / OWEN SOUND ONT." Under the orange shape is REGISTERED, and TRADEMARK is on the other side. The stippled area has"Orange" in script-style moulded lettering, with an angled up to the right look. On the other side is a "Quench" with a flourish, also angled up to the right. The base is also moulded with "CONTENTS 6 1/2 FL. OZ." (six and a half fluid ounces). The underside has DESIGN REG. over an inverted triangle with a "C" inside it, and "1939". |
Provenance |
Manufactured by Consumers Glass, likely in the 1940s. Around 1950 (another source says 1962), the maker's mark changed the pointed triangular mark to a more rounded upright triangular shape. Custom-ordered by the Wm. Taylor & Son Limited bottling company of Owen Sound. Last owned by Barry Ford of Brampton. His family lived in the Redwing area of the former Collingwood Township, Grey County. The item might have belonged to his maternal grandmother, Carena Carefoot (wife of Thomas Anderson Carefoot) who farmed at Redwing and later resided in Collingwood, Ontario. |

Function |
A unit container of a soda pop product that was bottled at Owen Sound. The bottle design was registered in 1939. The bottle would have a crimp top metal bottle cap put onto it after it was filled. The bottle was likely returned to the bottler for re-filling. |
